PCOS is not just a physical illness, it effects women emotionally and socially as well. It is common for women with PCOS to experience depression, chronic worry/anxiety about their physical health, body image and self-esteem problems, and increased stress when trying to coping with symptoms. Unfortunately, stress can make insulin resistance worse, making it harder to manage your PCOS. Learning to manage stress and anxiety, enhancing self-esteem and improving your coping mechanisms are all therefore an important part of managing your PCOS.
At the PCOS Centre, we have a Clinical Psychologist who has a particular interest in the management of PCOS, who is available to help you. Julie is committed to providing individually tailored treatments that are short-term, cost effective and scientifically validated. As such, the major treatment approach used is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), which has consistently been shown to be the most effective psychological therapy for a wide variety of emotional problems. During this type of therapy a person is assisted to identify and understand specific problematic behaviours, thought patterns and beliefs that cause and maintain psychological difficulties. CBT enables a person to learn new strategies to better manage their symptoms and problems. The outcome is that a person will function and cope better in their lives and relationships.
Your first session with Julie is a 1 hour session and forms your initial assessment. During this session she will ask you questions about the types of problems you are currently experiencing, how it is affecting your life, your background and history, and your goals and expectations of the sessions. These questions are asked to help Julie to determine how best to help you to resolve your current challenges. At the end of this session she will provide you with some feedback and information about your treatment, including approximately how many sessions you may need. All issues raised during your session with Julie remain strictly confidential (unless she is concerned for your safety or the safety of others). Only with your consent can information be discussed with any third party.
